One Room Challenge – Week 2 Laundry/Powder Room Renovation

It’s week 2 friends of the One Room Challenge and progress is being made in our laundry/powder room. Renovations can be a real headache at times but seeing the room evolve has been well worth it. I’m really excited to be participating this season in the ORC for many reasons but a largely because it keeps me on a schedule with a deadline. After a week of tying up loose ends around the house (still not finished by the way) I’ve come to realize I really do have design ADD. It’s a real thing I promise! I love starting new projects. The creativity starts flowing, I’m powering through and before I know it I’ve lost interest and I’m off to the next project. The One Room Challenge is great discipline and really pushes me to be patient but focused.

This past week in the laundry room has been a boring one for me. I say that with a slight grin because I know my husband has felt the exact opposite. He finished taking studs down and then got into the really fun part, moving the plumbing and vent pipe.

I really don’t know where I would be without J. He always wants to make me happy and make the project exactly what I’m envisioning. Moving the plumbing was not an easy task. He had to cut out the old piping and reroute it through the floor and into the garage. Towards the end he began to loose steam and when keeping up with his day job was as much as he could handle, he called a plumber. When the plumber came out he was so impressed and told J he was in the home stretch and he only needed to install some flex piping. So he did and the job is done and done well at that. No leaks here!

We also removed the old vanity. The piping for the sink actually comes up from the basement through the floor instead of through the wall. Unfortunately, there is a steel beam that runs the width of the house along that wall so the plumbing will have to stay in the floor. We are going to move it back against the wall as far as we can this week. That should minimize it. I figure I can just hide it all behind a lovely basket.

We picked up our sink as well this past week and I can’t tell you how amazed I am that we found such a bargain. Here is the sink that I’m using in this space. It sells for $450.00. I’ve seen it for even more other places. While searching Craigslist last week, which I never do. I’m one of those who typically trusts no one. I just know that it’s a murderer on the other end… but I did come across not just any sink but the exact same sink I was planning on purchasing! For a whopping $90 and lucky for us the couple selling it were not murderers but a really sweet retired couple. The sink is in perfect condition and I can’t wait to get it in place.

We still need to run the electrical to the back wall so we can install our sconce and once that’s done the ceiling planks. I just received our sconce this week from Wayfair. I had the pleasure of working with them last year on my first One Room Challenge. They’re such a joy to work with! I couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with them again. They have more light fixtures than I could even look through but when I came across this brass beauty, I had to have it!

This is my best attempts of trying to snap a photo of it uninstalled. Of course I had to open it as soon as it arrived and I love it in person just as much as I did when I saw it online. It’s going to go on the back wall above the washer and dryer with some open shelving just below it.

Is it just me or do you love getting mail? Even as a little girl I’ve always loved going to the mailbox or opening the front door and finding a package. There’s a little bit of excitement in not knowing what you’re going to get. It’s something I still look forward to each day.

Needless to say, I was doing a little happy dance yesterday when this bad boy showed up at my door.

This rug is one of the most affordable rugs I have found. Not only is it affordable, it’s beautiful! I searched high and low for the perfect rug for our space and I kept coming back to this one. The colors are rich and vibrant and the pattern is classic and traditional. I’m dying to see it in the space once the hardwood floors have been installed.

On the books this week to be done is to run wiring for the sconce, patch the sheet rock and move the sink plumbing back towards the wall. Once those steps are done we can install the light fixtures, plank the ceiling and start building the cabinets for around the washer and dryer.

I’m hoping these things wont take as longs as moving the plumbing did. I’m dying to get to the fun part of designing. It’s always the necessities that seem to take the longest. At least it’s progress! It’s amazing how much lighter and brighter this space feels. It’s already a thousand times better than it used to be. You can see the before picture and last week’s progress here.

Here’s a second look at the design board for this room –

That’s all I have for you this week. I hope you all have a wonderful Easter Sunday and I can’t wait to meet you back here next Wednesday to share our progress!
