DIY Vintage Photo Ornaments

I hope you all had a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving! Josh and I spent some great time with family and friends. I’ve been a little M.I.A in the last week. There has been so many things to arrange and plan for with the demo of the Breeze Hill colonial. We’ll be getting started tomorrow! Keep a look at for all the before photos.

Have you started on decorating for Christmas yet? We’re all decked out here at the Becker house! One DIY ornament that I did this year are these adorable wooden, photo ornaments. These are super easy and inexpensive to make. You may have seen tutorials for coasters using the same method. Shocker, it works for ornaments too!

Vintage Wooden Photo Ornaments

I purchased everything at Michael’s craft store. The ornaments were just under $1 each. I printed several black and white photos from Kinkos. You must print your photos on a laser jet printer for this project to work. If you don’t have a laser jet printer, it’s only .15 cents to print a page at Kinkos. You also need matte gel medium. You can find it in the painting section of Michael’s. I chose to paint my wooden ornaments white with an acrylic paint. You really can use any color you’d like. I would stick to a lighter color though.

Start by cutting out the photos to the size of your ornament. Brush on a thick layer of medium.

Turn the photo face down onto the ornament and smooth out any air bubbles. Let them dry over night.

Once they are completely dry, take a wet cloth and rub over the ornament. Take your finger and rub over the paper. The paper will begin to come off. You may need to apply more water as you go. Make sure not to scrub too rough. It can take the ink off. As the paper comes off your photo underneath is left.

I decided to take off the brown twine and use some red and white bakers twine to hang them. I think it added some great color.

These are such a great craft project that your kids can help with. You can use black and white photos or colored. Happy crafting friends!

These ornaments are wonderful. I have been meaning to get my “kid” christmas pics from over the years transformed into some type of photo ornament. These might inspire me!
